  1. THE UK AND EUROPEAN WEATHER DISCUSSION THREAD This is a brand new thread for everything related to UK and European weather and climate. I hope that many forum members will contribute on here - everyone is welcome. There is a growing number of UK, European and international members who have joined 33andrain during the last couple of years. Many of us participate on a number of threads including those designated to the CONUS climate as well as some of the more specialist and technical threads like Teleconnections, Arctic, Stratosphere and Hurricane threads. There have been a number of requests for a discussion thread focusing on the UK and Europe weather. So I'm delighted to launch this now. This thread will cover a wide range of UK and European weather related topics including: Forecast analyses Assessing model output Technical discussions Observations and records Latest news Climate History Research Reviews of papers and presentations I will add to this list as this thread evolves. In general I would like this thread to appeal to as wide an audience as possible. This will include beginners, those wishing to learn as well as those wishing to participate in more advanced and technical discussions. If anyone has any particular ideas for the development of this thread please either make your suggestions in a post or PM me or any of the regular posters. I run a full time online business from home (not weather related) but will do my best to respond to queries. I will have limited time for posting on this thread as I also post on the Arctic and Teleconnections threads as well as on the Hurricane thread and occasionally on several of the US discussion threads. Research Portal: I set up the Research Portal in April 2018, which now has over 1,500 papers and presentations in it with a comprehensive index. Some of these are related to the UK and Europe and I have many more to add. Here's a link: . As an example, if you go through the portal index, you will find this heading: European Climate: A robust empirical seasonal prediction of winter NAO and surface climate How Predictable Are the Arctic and North Atlantic Oscillations? Exploring the Variability and Predictability of the Northern Hemisphere Near-term Climate Predictions of the North Atlantic Region - YouTube Presentation Skillful long‐range prediction of European and North American winters The role of the stratosphere in the European climate response to El Niño If you click on any of the titles, you will be taken to a summary or abstract of the paper or presentation. From there, you will find a direct link to the full paper or presentation. If anyone has suitable papers which can be added to the portal, please let me know. I will need the full title and if possible (to save me time) the link, the publication date and the author(s). If anyone reviews a paper on this thread (which is not already in the portal), I'll happily add it to the portal and give you credit for finding it. Within the portal you'll also find an "Archived Charts Library" - link: Many of these apply to the northern hemisphere and some directly to the UK and Europe. See also, the "useful links" section below. A small team of us work on the portal and the archived charts library and we are hoping to add several more forum members to our admin team. Please let me know if you can spare a little time to get involved in this process. List of Useful Links to UK and European Sites, Data, Facts, Charts etc: This list will gradually evolve in line with the thread (so work in progress). If you have a link that you feel is relevant, please draw this to my attention by "replying to topic" or with a "personal message". PLEASE NOTE THAT I WILL WORK ON THIS LIST WHEN I GET A CHANCE DURING THE COMING WEEKS Meteociel: - links to the main models plus UK and European observations NCEP and Meteoceil Model Re-Analysis and Archive Charts - the link takes you via the portal Archived Charts Library. Charts go back to 1871. Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) data: - this excellent site provides some great charts of European and North Atlantic SSTs and and currents and the Arctic section covers the ice profile and temperature. There is a pull down menu for a host of options - scroll right down for the regions. There is some less widely available data such as a "sea water salinity" chart. NCEP 2m Surface Temperature Anomalies by region: - includes forecast, current and past charts and anomalies and an archive back to back to January 2011. The regions include Europe, northern hemisphere, global and the Arctic. NOAA Snow Cover Maps: current snow cover maps for Northern Hemisphere, North America and Eurasia. Transferred to new site in early 2019: NOAA Snow Cover Maps: archive snow cover maps for Northern Hemisphere, North America and Eurasia daily from 1997 to date: NASA WorldView Satellite Imagery: - with many options and tools to create your own world or regional images. Climate Reanalyzer: - for current weather data and analysis (northern hemisphere). Many more to follow during the next few weeks I will edit this page from time to time as well as add to the list of topics and links. Enjoy this thread and please start posting! David
