Question

Hello, can someone explain what the 50/50 low is and how it can impact winter storms along the east coast?

This is low pressure (surface and 500 mb) that develops or is present at roughly 50N, 50W (latitude, longitude). It is important, because it can slow the progression of high pressure out to sea (blocking). As a result, colder air is supplied to the region, storms are less likely to cut and snowier outcomes are more likely in the winter.
