This is just a personal thing, but I do not like looking at the charts - I don’t think they tell the whole story. Generation, orientation , and evolution/interplay within the overall environment are things that make a huge difference in a forecast and are not at all represented by these charts. And this goes for both positive and negative signs. Just a personal opinion, of course, but this is why I exclusively look at the anomaly maps (where applicable).

I like to look at both to get the whole picture but I rely heavily (as you can probably tell) on the anomaly maps. Indices are great and all but as I proved before, can be misleading ESPECIALLY in such a progressive and transient pattern.

General statement. I agree with everything you have stated about the 2016 blizzard.

I think you have me confused with the other poster who said it was a "thread the needle" event. I did not.

Yeah, that’s my bad @Rtd208. My apologies. Thank you @SnowWolf87 for the correction :)

For the 100000th time,  it took advantage of its brief window of opportunity and struck gold in an overall bad pattern winter.

And as half a dozen posters here showed you that is incorrect.

Edit, this is also a major step back from your thread the needle comment. There is a difference between thread the needle and taking advantage of a well advertised favorable window of opportunity.

Oh yeah, no, I totally agree. It could be too because I’m a “visual” person, so being able to watch the model projections as a loop helps me to apply the corrections I believe are likely to occur as lead time decreases and then visualize the evolution based on the application of those corrections, whereas those charts are just too static for me. That’s all. As I said, it’s all personal preference.

It is also no justification in the slightest to say that such an occurence is possible or likely again this winter in a much less favorable overall pattern (with no windows of opportunity showing up even closely resembling the favorable window advertised in 16).

I can generally agree with both of these, and appreciate your clarification @RoaDawg. I’d disagree that the the window was brief, as we had a multi-week stretch during which this entire evolution occurred, but as @SnowWolf87 said, this is a different point that you’ve clarified, but is one that I cannot fundamentally disagree with other than the above.

So what’s the general consensus.  What’s the most important teleconnection for good east coast winter storms .  AO/NAO/PNA?

At least the AO is forecasted to dive back to near neutral

Correct me if I’m wrong but the latest MJO forecasts are to be in phase 8 around 2/26 to 3/1.   NAO going neutral to negative as well.   Hopefully signals for a good start to March.  Grasping at anything positive here in a lame winter
