trump was never popular, ever. He was popular with conservatives who wanted to use him to pack the court and hicks and ignorant Americans. Being popular to some doesn’t make you generally popular. Approval never rating never approached 50%

I'm talking locally here, but some around here took a chance on Trump in 2016 for something different.   And these are educated people.   However by 2020 those same people saw that it didn't work and voted for Biden.   Suburbs is where Trump lost in many states.

Btw... this is a great core group of political junkies we have posting in here. It’s been very informative and we’ve been... mostly well behaved... present company excluded.  Wanted to thank everyone

No, I suck too.  You know why?   Because we’re all in this together.   I’m an American first - I am only as good or as bad as the best or the worst American.   It’s not “

I'm talking about all the rallies that were in favor for Trump. I never saw that with any other president.

How many votes did Reagan get ? Trump got more votes than any other president in history ( well of course not as much as Biden )  unless I'm also wrong here.

Imagine comparing rally sizes in the midst of a pandemic that one side took seriously and the other didn't.

Reagan got 54 million votes in 1984. Kerry got 59 million in 2004

Exactly, but nobody in their right mind would say that Kerry in 2004 was as popular as Reagan in 1984.

any idea what the % of turnout was for registered voters?  That's another metric to consider.
I think many shrug and don't vote because it's so far in one direction that they feel it won't matter if they vote.

53.3% in 84, 56.7% in 2004 vs a whopping 66.7 this past election

Mail-in voting had a lot to do with it.

plus the current political environment of the two sides either liking or disliking each party's candidate

There's a bunch of reports of staff members of actual Reps and multiple other republican officials being at the Capitol riot.

Here's just one example
